The Catholic Schools Office Honors 2019 Archdiocese of Boston Excellence in Education Award Recipients

Excellence in Education Honorees with Cardinal Sean and Superintendent Thomas Carroll

BRAINTREE, MA (June 6, 2019): The Archdiocese of Boston Catholic Schools Office, with support from the Catholic Schools Foundation, recognized and celebrated the 10 recipients of the prestigious Archdiocese of Boston Excellence in Education Award. This annual award honors elementary and secondary school teachers' commitment to developing saints and scholars in the Catholic schools in the Archdiocese of Boston. The honorees received $1,500 and were feted at a luncheon with Cardinal Seán O'Malley and Superintendent of Archdiocese of Boston Catholic Schools Thomas Carroll.

“This year’s recipients have wonderful stories of dedication, passion and have exhibited true excellence in Catholic education." said Thomas Carroll. “On behalf of the Catholic Schools Office and the Catholic Schools Foundation, we applaud the recipients for their initiative, innovation and commitment."

Cardinal Seán O’Malley, in his introductory remarks, said, “There could be no Catholic education without our Catholic school teachers. Today’s celebration is a token of our appreciation and our desire to celebrate your commitment, your talents, and all that you are doing to make Catholic education a reality in our Archdiocese.”
Annie Smith, Director of Data & Research at the Catholic Schools Office and Chair of the Excellence in Education Awards Committee, said, “Among this year’s award recipients are a fisherman, artists, athletes, world travelers, and a former chief innovation officer. None of those talents, however, compare with the honorees’ servant hearts, which work to bring students multiple encounters with Christ each day.”

Administrators, staff, pastors, parents and students were encouraged to nominate excellent teachers in their schools. The Excellence in Education Award's selection committee, comprised of past recipients of the award and members of the Catholic Schools Office, read all nominations and interviewed the finalists to identify 10 exemplary educators. The committee received more than 120 nominations for excellent teachers in the Archdiocese of Boston.
